It's true that the uppermost part of northwestern Wisconsin is world-renowned for its lush, scenic landscape and incredible array of opportunities for outdoor recreation. What is less well known is the quirky charm of this unique region, specifically towns like Cumberland, Wisconsin. Located a mere hour and a half northeast from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Cumberland is a delightful respite from the rest of the world; the perfect spot for a short getaway or a long summer vacation.
While Cumberland is certainly a great spot to visit, it's an even better spot to live! The quality of life here is excellent. The public school district is very highly rated, medical care is world-class and there are a multitude of community amenities including a community theater, an airport, numerous shopping venues, public parks, cozy diners and even an eighteen hole golf course. Cumberland is also conveniently located near a branch of the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Technical Institute. Many resorts can be found in and around the Cumberland area, some even on the adjacent Beaver Dam Lake.
Located in Barron County, Wisconsin, Cumberland has a population of approximately two thousand year-round residents. While it is situated in some of the most beautiful, pristine countryside imaginable, Cumberland is also conveniently located about an hour northeast from the metropolis of the Twin Cities; Minneapolis/St. Paul and an hour northwest of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Cumberland and the surrounding region offers the best of both natural and cosmopolitan worlds. Ski, fish, hunt, canoe, water-ski, mountain bike or hike to your heart's content and then experience all that a metropolitan city has to offer all within easy driving distance.
Cumberland is even home to the "Rutabaga Festival," an annual event featuring live music, carnival rides, a parade, games and food, celebrating the unique vegetable; the Rutabaga. Wondering what a rutabaga is? It's a root vegetable with a mile flavor, similar to a turnip, noted for their ability to last through the cold winter months after their fall harvest. Held each year in late August, the Rutabaga Festival is an event not to be missed in and around Cumberland, Wisconsin. With a Pepper Eating Contest, live music and rutabaga dishes of every variety, what's not to love?
While land here is highly desirable, it has the added advantage of being relatively reasonable, especially when compared with coastal areas on the eastern or Pacific seaboards. Luxury vacation homes and cozy cabins dot the lakeshore, providing a plethora of housing options. Even if you don't plan to live in Cumberland year round, investing in a vacation home can be a wonderful opportunity to generate a little extra income by renting out the property to other travelers. Even if you cannot find the perfect property in and around Cumberland, be sure to keep an eye out for a great lakefront lot where you can build the vacation destination of your dreams!
Beaver Dam Lake is approximately 6,700 acres. It's maximum depth is seven feet, but it is still home to a variety of native Wisconsin species including panfish, northern pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and, of course, walleye. It is situated around the community of Cumberland, make the town itself into a sort of island. Cumberland is affectionately known as the 'Island City' due to this unique geography. The Ojibwe band of the Chippewa tribe referred to the lake as Chewacummatowangok, meaning 'lake of the beavers.'
In 1874, a man by the name of Gunder O. Dahlby built a cabin here, coming into territory that had once been occupied solely by the Chippewa-Ojibwe Indians. A post office followed in 1876, followed by a community school shortly thereafter. In 1879, the community was formally named 'Cumberland.' It was incorporated in approximately 1885. The make-up of the community was historically multi-national, making Cumberland a unique 'melting pot' of cultures here in the Wisconsin North Woods. This diversity still exists today and has helped to contribute to the rich and unique culture of Cumberland and its surrounding regions. Agriculture, railroads and the paper industry have been historic mainstays of the economy. In the early 20th century, Cumberland and the surrounding region became increasingly reliant on tourism to support the economy. With the gorgeous scenery, lush forests, multitude of natural resources and countless opportunities for outdoor recreation on the crystal clear lakes, Cumberland has retained its status as an ideal family vacation destination to the present day.
If you are looking for a new, unique, memorable and beautiful spot where you and your families can come and create memories to last a lifetime, check out Cumberland, Wisconsin. Come for the Rutabaga Festival and stay for a week, a month or even longer. Cumberland is a great spot to live if you are looking for a dramatic change in your lifestyle and an improvement in your quality of life!
