Located in Barron County, Wisconsin, Cumberland has a population of approximately two thousand year-round residents. While it is situated in some of the most beautiful, pristine countryside imaginable, Cumberland is also conveniently located about an hour northeast from the metropolis of the Twin Cities; Minneapolis/St. Paul and an hour northwest of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Beaver Dam Lake is approximately 6,700 acres. It's maximum depth is seven feet, but it is still home to a variety of native Wisconsin species including panfish, northern pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and, of course, walleye. It is situated around the community of Cumberland, make the town itself into a sort of island. Cumberland is affectionately known as the 'Island City' due to this unique geography. The Ojibwe band of the Chippewa tribe referred to the lake as Chewacummatowangok, meaning 'lake of the beavers.'
In 1874, a man by the name of Gunder O. Dahlby built a cabin here, coming into territory that had once been occupied solely by the Chippewa-Ojibwe Indians. A post office followed in 1876, followed by a community school shortly thereafter. In 1879, the community was formally named 'Cumberland.' It was incorporated in approximately 1885. The make-up of the community was historically multi-national, making Cumberland a unique 'melting pot' of cultures here in the Wisconsin North Woods. This diversity still exists today and has helped to contribute to the rich and unique culture of Cumberland and its surrounding regions. Agriculture, railroads and the paper industry have been historic mainstays of the economy. In the early 20th century, Cumberland and the surrounding region became increasingly reliant on tourism to support the economy. With the gorgeous scenery, lush forests, multitude of natural resources and countless opportunities for outdoor recreation on the crystal clear lakes, Cumberland has retained its status as an ideal family vacation destination to the present day.
