While Minocqua today is a wonderful spot for a weekend getaway or an extended family vacation, its rich history helps to set it apart from other vacation destinations in northern Wisconsin. Groups including the Ojibwe Indians, French fur traders and lumberjacks all played an integral role in the development of the region. The name Minocqua itself is believed to have been inherited from the language of the Ojibwe Indians who once inhabited the region. In the Ojibwe language, the word Ninocqua means noon-day rest and it suspected that Minocqua was once a spot where the Ojibwe people once rested during their travels foraging for wild game, berries and fish. Even today, Minocqua is world-renowned as a destination for bow and rifle hunting and, of course, fishing on local lakes including Diamond Lake, Booth Lake and Squirrel Lake.

A vast majority of the state of Wisconsin was covered by old world growth forests, perfect for the growing paper and lumber industries. Minocqua itself was established as a town in 1889. In the late 1800's, the Milwaukee Railroad began establishing lines in the North Woods, in order to more quickly transport lumber to market. With the decline of the lumber industry in the late 1800's, Minocqua and the surrounding region began to see an influx of travelers seeking a respite from the larger cities such as Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul. With crystal clear lakes perfect for fishing, thousands of miles of forests to explore, and welcoming North Woods communities, northern Wisconsin became an annual destination for many, particularly in the hot summer months.

With the influx of vacationers at the turn of the century, downtown Minocqua became a bustling downtown community. While a fire tragically levelled much of downtown Minocqua in 1912, many of the businesses rebuilt. Many of these rebuilt structures still stand today. Local landmarks include the Minocqua Community Center, the historic Matt Morgan's, the Thirsty Whale and Torpy Park. The last Saturday of every September, the locals host the annual Beef-A-Rama, a celebration of local cuisine and the beef industry of northern Wisconsin.

Winter is simply magical in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Cross country ski through the pristine wilderness, experience the peacefulness of ice fishing, or enjoy the thrill of racing across the snow on a snow-mobile. Each year, the residents of the town pile up all the available snow they can find to construct what is quite possibly the largest snowman in northern Wisconsin. A team of local residents including the Minocqua Volunteer Fire Department work over the course of two days to construct 'Joe Snow.' Truly a site to behold, Joe Snow is a tradition not to be missed if you happen to find yourself in northern Wisconsin during the cold months of winter.

Minocqua today has a year-round population of approximately 4,800. The population swells in the summer months. By some estimates it nearly quadruples. With such increased traffic from tourism, vacation rental properties are at a premium in the summer months. If you have ever dreamed of owning a lakefront property in the North Woods, but wondered how you might be able to afford it, take a look at the options for renting out your property to travelers from near and far. Renting out the property can help your real estate investment generate some income during time periods you and your family are unable to use the property.

Whether you are looking for a short getaway destinataion, a lake lot or a real estate investment opportunity of a lifetime, Minocqua is the perfect choice. If you are seeking something truly remarkable from your next vacation, consider planning a trip to Minocqua, Wisconsin.
